'To a waterfowl' -- a.k.a. 'Pelican poems'

Just a bit more on pelicans. First, a few 'fast facts' about them from the National Geographic site mentioned yesterday; second, a couple tankas based on admiring observation.

Diet: Carnivore
Average life span in the wild: 10-25 years or more
Size: Body, 5.8 ft (1.8 m); wingspan, 10 ft (3 m)
Weight: 30 lbs (13 kg)

(note: These numbers may apply to larger pelican varieties than the brown ones, which are the only dark pelicans and unlike their kin, not found on inland lakes.)

1.
Tandems and trios
circle over fish-filled bay:
diving pelicans’

jagged silhouettes arrow
suddenly into “bait balls.”

2.
Diving pelicans
knife through water then bob up
to swallow and float

before victory lapping
circles over beach and sea
